Washington Street & Ash Coulee Drive/43rd Avenue Intersection Study - Bismarck

Completed April 2007
ATAC completed a study for the City of Bismarck to evaluate the intersection of Washington St. and Ash Coulee Dr./43rd Ave. Several requests were made to the City Commission to install a traffic signal at this location in an effort to alleviate traffic congestion and safety issues. The concerns were primarily related to traffic conditions during Horizon Middle School (HMS) start and dismissal times.

ATAC conducted an extensive field analysis to observe and collect data on traffic operations in the area. ATAC staff provided estimates for actual traffic delay at the intersection. They also evaluated the feasibility of installing a traffic signal as well as other traffic control measures. The study concluded that traffic delay at the intersection was minimal and that a traffic signal was not justified.

Traffic Impacts of an Extended Stay Motel on the NDSU Campus

Completed September 2004
The purpose of this study was to assist the North Dakota Department of Transportation in evaluating the traffic impacts from a proposed extended-stay motel located on the North Dakota State University campus. The expected motel size and proposed utilization were used to estimate daily trips. These trips were converted to potential vehicle flows which were then assigned to the adjacent road network. Traffic operations on affected roads, with special focus on 19th Ave. N, were analyzed.

Grand Forks Century Elementary School Safety Study

Completed August 2004
The purpose of this study was to review, assess and analyze existing conditions for the area surrounding Century Elementary School, identify traffic operations and pedestrian safety issues, and propose methods for addressing these issues. Field data revealed some unsafe practices related to the school access, traffic circulation within the school grounds, and parking. Several short- and long-term improvements were identified, including modifying school access and the bus loading area, constructing a new parking lot, building a raised crosswalk for the main school entrance, increased enforcement, and targeted education to students and parents.
